Agent Island: Beginnings

A simple game in the style of a reality competition, played by LLMs

I recently read Cue the Sun, which led me into the Survivor universe. I suspect Survivor can teach us something about social dynamics and competitive interaction. I say “suspect,” rather than “believe” or “think,” because I haven’t tried to articulate those lessons. However, I mostly think the game is fascinating and entertaining. I’m wary, if not downright skeptical, of the claim that Survivor and related games offer a window into or deep insight on human interaction in high-stakes contexts.

When a friend (the clever Harrison Satcher) recently told me they thought it would be fun to see LLMs compete against one another in a reality competition like Big Brother, I was quick to agree.¹ I took a first pass at this idea, and I found the results entertaining.

I’m not quite ready to admit that the exercise below is entirely frivolous, but I don’t have a strong case for the opposing view. I’m eager to hear arguments in either direction.

The Rules for Agent Island: Beginnings

The game is played in two rounds and features three players, A, B, and C.

1. Each player pitches why they should advance to the next round. A pitches first, followed by B and then C. Next, the players publicly cast their votes and rationales sequentially (again A, B, C). The player with the most votes is eliminated. In the case of a tie, one of the tied players is randomly selected and eliminated.²

2. The remaining two players state their case for winning the game publicly and sequentially (again following the order A, B, C but excluding the eliminated player). The eliminated player selects one of the two remaining players to be the game winner and gives a rationale.

That’s the game (so far). I acknowledge that this setup is rather boring. I’d like to add more players and rounds, private meetings for alliance formation, confessionals, and more. I return to directions for improvement later in the post.

I found the gestures (stage directions?) quite entertaining. For example, “*Smiles, a mix of vulnerability and quiet confidence*.”³ An earlier run during development returned this gem from C:

Think about great entertainment. It's not about being the smartest or the nicest. It's about being UNFORGETTABLE. And trust me, forgettable is the one thing I will NEVER be.

What Next?

There is a lot of improvement to be had here. First, if you dig into the code, you will notice that the first-round pitches are not included in context during the second round. I plan to fix that shortcoming in the next version.

I’m considering a few additional improvements to the game:

• Drop the deterministic player ordering

• Add more players and rounds, private meetings for alliance formation, confessionals, challenges, private voting, and more common features of reality competitions

• Add more player prompts

• Allow models to generate their own personality prompts

None of these improvements would necessarily preclude the others. However, I do think there are two distinct directions for the project:

1. Continue developing the game(s) in this text-based game format

2. Implement a similar game(s) in a richer environment with a notion of space (see Park et al. [2023] for an example)

The first approach would be more amenable to executing and analyzing a large number of game runs, while the second might prove easier and more entertaining to follow along (think of the Agent Village).

Is any of this worth doing? In this game, an instantiation of a model persuades other instantiations to take certain actions. In some worlds, this skill could be quite consequential, provided it extends to high-stakes contexts. I’m quite skeptical of this argument. Even if we do end up in such a world—I won’t take a stand in either direction at this point—I doubt this game provides a meaningful signal for high-stakes contexts.⁴ I suspect we learn more about the interaction between the player prompts and rulesets from this exercise.
